How to Clean a Diesel Air Filter Without Wrecking It

Clean a diesel air filter with dry compressed air only, blown from the inside out at low pressure. Pull the primary element, leave the safety element alone, and work the air from the clean side toward the dirty side so the dust leaves the way it came in, keeping whatever you are using well off the media. Then put a light inside the filter and look at every pleat before it goes back on the machine. No water, no detergent, no solvent, and no banging it on a tire to knock the dirt loose. A paper element that has been washed, or hit with 150 psi out of a single nozzle, is scrap even when it looks perfectly good sitting there on the bench.

Why does this matter going into harvest?

Because the next eight weeks are the dirtiest air your machines will breathe all year, and fuel is not cheap right now.

As of the first week of August 2026, on-highway diesel in the Midwest was running about $5.26 a gallon, up roughly a dollar and a half from where it sat a year ago. Dyed off-road fuel runs cheaper, so use whatever you actually pay at your own tank. Either way, every gallon a plugged filter costs you is worth more than it was last season.

Here is what that looks like on real machines. In our own field trials we took two identical John Deere 7750 tractors, both right at 600 horsepower, and ran them the same twelve hour day on the same job in the same field. The following morning we cleaned one filter and left the other alone. By the end of the second day the tractor with the dirty filter had burned 58 gallons more fuel than the one we had cleaned, which at today's Midwest price is a little over $300 out of your pocket from one machine in one day.

The part of that trial people have the hardest time believing is what we found when we pulled the filters. Both were already mostly plugged after a single day of work. We got four and a half pounds of dirt out of the first one, and when we finally cleaned the second one the next day we only got about five, which told us it had quit taking on dirt because it had no room left.

What do you need to clean a diesel air filter?

Not much, honestly. An air supply, something that will deliver that air at low pressure from inside the element, safety glasses, a light, and somewhere reasonably clean to work. That last one matters more than people give it credit for, because if you open a housing in a dusty yard with the wind up, you are pulling dirt straight into the clean side of the intake while the filter sits on the fender. That is a genuine way to dust an engine, and it happens during maintenance more often than it happens in operation. Wear the glasses too. You are about to pull four or five pounds of dry dirt back out of a filter and a good share of it is coming at your face, and on an aggregate site or a road build where there is silica in the dust, put a mask on as well.

How do you clean a diesel air filter, step by step?

  1. Shut the machine down and let it sit. Nobody should be able to bump the starter while your hands are in the intake.
  2. Clean the outside of the housing before you open it. Wipe down the cover and the area around the latches, because whatever is sitting on top of that housing is going inside it the second you pop the lid. On a combine that has been running soybean dust all afternoon there can be a quarter inch of fines sitting up there.
  3. Pull the primary element straight out. Do not twist it. Ease it out with a little side to side motion, keeping it level so you are not dumping the dust load off the pleats and into the housing you just finished wiping.
  4. Leave the safety element alone. Look at it while it is seated, without pulling it. If it is clean and undamaged then it stays exactly where it is.
  5. Blow the primary out from the inside. Low pressure, dry air, working from the clean air side outward toward the dirty side, moving steadily along the full length of the pleats until dust stops coming off. Keep whatever you are using off the media, because the moment a nozzle touches that paper you have made a hole in it.
  6. Wipe out the housing and the seal surfaces. A damp rag on the inside of the housing and the outlet tube, then let it dry before anything goes back in.
  7. Inspect the element. Light on the inside, eyes on the outside, and I will go through what you are looking for in a minute.
  8. Reinstall it and make sure it actually seats. The seal is doing as much work as the media is. The cover ought to latch without you leaning on it, and the dust ejector valve on the housing needs to be clear and pointed down where it belongs.
  9. Reset your restriction gauge so that the next reading you take means something.

Once you have done a few, the whole thing runs about two minutes a filter, and that is really the point of the exercise. If servicing a filter turns into a twenty minute production nobody is going to do it daily, and in heavy dust it needs to happen daily.

Why does straight shop air ruin a filter?

This is worth sitting with for a minute, because it explains why your filter guy tells you never to clean a filter at all, and I have had that argument across more parts counters than I care to count. He is not making it up. What he is wrong about is the conclusion he draws from it.

What he has watched come back through his door is an operator standing on the step of a tractor with a blow gun hooked to a shop line running 125 to 150 psi, putting every bit of that through one small opening aimed square at the paper. Media was never built to take a concentrated jet like that, so it tears, and the tears are small enough that you will not spot them from two feet away under shop lights.

What you have then is a filter that looks clean, seals fine, goes back in the housing, and quietly feeds abrasive dust across a turbo compressor wheel spinning north of 100,000 rpm. The filter never failed. The way it got cleaned failed, and the filter took the blame.

Guidance on doing it properly has been consistent across the industry for years: blow from the clean side toward the dirty side, keep the pressure down, keep the nozzle off the element, and never beat or knock an element to shake the dust loose. Around 5 bar, call it 70 psi, is the outer limit you will see quoted most often, and a good many OEM manuals put it down at 30.

Direction matters every bit as much as pressure does. Dirt collects on the outside of the pleats, so if you blow from the outside in, all you are doing is driving that dirt deeper into the media where it will sit and raise your restriction. It has to come out the way it went in.

What should you check before the filter goes back in?

Every single time, and I mean that literally rather than as a figure of speech. This is the step that gets skipped when the sun is going down and there is still forty acres left.

Put a light inside the element and turn it slowly in a dark corner of the shop, looking for pinholes and thin spots, anywhere light comes through media that ought to be solid. That check catches damage nothing else will show you. It is the same one we run on our own test filters, and one of ours passed it after being cleaned 29 times over eight days, which tells you a properly cleaned element has more life in it than most people give it credit for. I still check every one of them anyway.

While it is in your hands, look at:

  • The sealing surface, for nicks, cuts, hardening, or grit pressed into the urethane
  • The end caps, for any separation from the media
  • The pleats, for dents, crushed sections, or spots that stayed packed after cleaning
  • Oil, soot, or moisture staining, which usually means something else is wrong upstream
  • The inside of the outlet tube, for dust trails, which mean dirt has already gotten past

If you find any of that, the filter is finished and a new one goes in without a second thought. A primary element costs a fraction of a turbo and a very small fraction of a set of liners. What should you never do to an air filter?

Do not wash it. Not with water, not with detergent, not with solvent, and certainly not with a pressure washer. A cellulose element is not a washable performance filter, whatever the fellow with the oiled cotton filter in his pickup tells you. Soak one and the media swells, the resin binder starts breaking down, and it dries out warped and weak. Moisture is bad news in general here: in our own testing, a filter that worked a wet twelve hour day came out five pounds heavier than an identical one that worked a dry day, because wet dirt packs down tighter and chokes off airflow harder than dry dust ever will.

The safety element does not get cleaned. That inner element is insurance for the day the primary lets something through, and it is not a second filter for you to service. Donaldson states it about as plainly as it can be stated: do not attempt to clean a safety filter, and never run an engine with only the safety filter installed. It gets replaced on a schedule instead, commonly between every second and every fourth primary change. And if you ever pull the primary and find the safety loaded up with dust, stop and figure out how that dirt got past, because something has already gone wrong.

Keep the starting fluid away from it. Ether makes the element brittle, we have been saying so for years, and it is still about the quickest way there is to turn a good filter into a cracked one.

Banging it on a tire does not count as cleaning. I know it feels productive and I know everybody has done it. It bends pleats, works the seal loose from the end cap, and cracks media, and it does not get the fines out of the pleats where they are actually sitting.

One more, and this one cuts the other direction. Do not service a filter just because it looks dirty. A filter that looks filthy is very often working at its best, because the dust cake on the pleats catches finer particles than clean media does, and every time you open that housing you are adding a dusting risk for no reason. How many times can you clean a diesel air filter?

More times than most people expect, and there is no fixed number, so anybody who hands you one is guessing. We have run a single filter to 29 cleanings across eight days and it still passed a light inspection afterward, and across hundreds of filters cleaned repeatedly in bench testing we have not torn one yet. The inspection is what answers this question, not a tally.

What pressure should I use?

Keep it low. Industry guidance tops out around 70 psi at the media and a lot of OEM manuals say 30 or less. The number on your regulator only tells you half of it though, because 48 psi distributed around the inside of an element and 48 psi concentrated on one spot do very different things to paper.

Can I clean it without pulling it off the machine?

No, and it is not close. You cannot get air to the clean side of an element while it is seated in the housing, and you certainly cannot inspect it in place. Knocking the dust off the outside is not the same activity.

My filter supplier says never to clean filters. Who is right?

Both of us, after a fashion. He is right that the way most people go about it destroys filters, and he is the one who has to look at the wreckage when it comes back to his counter. Where he is wrong is in concluding that there is no correct way to do it. Low distributed pressure from the inside out, followed by an actual inspection, is a completely different operation from a blow gun and 150 psi, even though both of them get described as cleaning the filter.

How often should I be doing this?

In heavy dust, every day. Harvest, an aggregate yard, a feedlot, a dry haul road, it all counts. In cleaner conditions let a restriction gauge set the interval for you rather than the calendar.

Get the filter back on the machine instead of in the trash

None of this is complicated work. It is just easy work to do wrong, and doing it wrong costs you an engine instead of a filter, which is a lousy thing to discover in the middle of harvest.
