A loader living in a gravel pile can pack a filter solid before lunch. How do you know it is time, without guessing?

Watch the restriction indicator, also called a filter minder. It reads the pressure drop across the filter, which is the real measure of how plugged it is. You cannot tell by looking, because a black, ugly filter can still be flowing fine and a cleaner-looking one can be choked.

The engine makers back this up. Detroit Diesel tells operators to check the air cleaner restriction indicator on schedule, or more often when the engine runs in severe dusty conditions, and to service the element once it hits the maximum allowable restriction. Caterpillar says the same about its own filters: use the service indicator and service the filter only once it has actually reached its limit.

That last part cuts both ways, and it is the piece most people miss. You can clean too often. Every time you pop the housing open you give dust a way in, and a filter that is only half loaded is still doing its job, so cleaning it early just burns filter life and adds a chance to contaminate the intake. Do not pull it just to eyeball it. Clean it when the gauge tells you, and not before.

And inspect the filter before every reinstall. Drop a light inside it in a dark spot and look for thin spots or pinholes. If the light comes through even, it goes back in. If you see bright spots, it is done.
